Mary Said YES!

Picture this: an angel crashes into an ordinary afternoon with an impossible ask. Mary gets asked. Then Joseph. Then a bunch of shepherds who'd rather stay with their sheep, and some wise ones following a star they can't even explain. Every single one of them has an out. Every single one of them takes the risk instead.

Mary Said YES! is a joyful, participatory Christmas pageant for congregations of every size, built around a narrator carrying the story while the whole community - cast, kids, and grown-ups alike - gets swept into saying yes right along with them. It's about all the reasons we have to say no, and the courage it takes to say yes anyway. It's about a God who keeps showing up with impossible invitations, and about anyone, of any age, who has ever wondered if they have what it takes, and stepped up to take the risk regardless.

Then Do It Scared

It’s time to begin rehearsals for the Christmas pageant, and all the participants are a little nervous – will they get the part they’ve been hoping for? Will they remember their cues and their lines? Will their grown-ups come to watch, or will they be too busy? What if they sneeze right in the middle of Silent Night?? Then a new kid shows up, very sure there’s a part for him (spoiler alert – he has a drum!), but there’s one issue – no one can find him in the pages of the story they’re looking to tell.

Then Do It Scared is a flexible, forgiving, joyful Christmas pageant made for faith communities of all shapes and sizes. It’s about fear and courage. It’s about anyone – of any age – who has ever wondered if they really belong, and who has ever stepped up to do the scary thing not because they had no fear, but rather with their fear tucked right alongside them.

Andrea serves as pastor at Diamond Lake Lutheran Church. She's the founder of the Pray-Ground movement and a Moth GrandSLAM champion, teaching workshops on the craft of storytelling for churches and other organizations in the Twin Cities and beyond. She lives with her family in south Minneapolis.
